Mission
of CIEA
~
To improve
the level of biomedical research ~
In the 1950s,
Tatsuji Nomura was a
medical researcher
performing research
on infectious disease
and having trouble obtaining
reproducible results
due to the low quality of
laboratory animals. He made up his mind to
devote himself to improving the level of biomedical
research in Japan by producing high quality- laboratory animals, and
for this purpose, he founded
the
Central Institute for Experimental Animals (CIEA)
in 1952.
Since its
inception, CIEA has been dedicated to development of animal models and
establishment of concepts and methods for quality control of laboratory
animals to assure reproducible animal experiments as gliving assay
systemsh.
Our
concept of quality specifications
for
laboratory animals for quality control has
had a major influence on laboratory animals
around the world.
We have been comprehensively
developing
both laboratory animals and animal experimentation.
We
pride ourselves on taking international leadership in
the field, collaborating with research organizations internationally and
also closely working with
the
World Health Organization (WHO), US National
Institutes of Health (NIH), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and
International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS).
We
maintain
close collaboration with medical doctors who have
a deep knowledge of human
disease in the development of
more useful
animal experimentation systems. All these efforts are
aimed at
improving the quality of human health, as well as further
developments in medical science. At the same time, we would like
to contribute to
the
3Rs (Reduction, Replacement, and Refinement) of experimental
animals
by providing animal experimentation systems with high accuracy and
reproducibility.
